Beginners guide to Web design

Advanced topics

Once a web site is up and running the work does not end there. With a good site the work never ends. They need to be maintained and updated regularly to bring in repeat visitors.

Banner Exchange programs

Banner exchange programs are an excellent way to advertise your site. Most banner exchange services are free All you do is place a banner on your page with links to other sites. In return your banner will be displayed on these sites.

Usually it takes two ad displays or impressions on your site to earn you an ad impression on another site in the network.

please see the page on Banner Exchange Programs for more details.

Newsgroups

Browse the newsgroups for subjects related to your site. When ever someone asks for information on a topic you are knowledgeable on send a posting with the URL of your site in the signature. You are bound to see a surge in traffic to your site

But please do make sure that you understand the posting guidelines of posting and have read the FAQ of the group you are posting to.

Search Engines

For most sites the number of source of visitors are the search engines. It's very likely that you came here byway of a search engine

There are several services on the internet that allows you to submit your site to several search engines at once. All most all of them have a free service that lets you submit to the top engines free of charge. The advantage of using such programs is that you have to fill in just one form instead 10 or 15. But it is suspected but not confirmed that some search engines ignore these automated submissions.

So a better idea is to submit your links manually, at least to the more important search engines. you can find the relevant links in the Add URL page of this site. Before you register please read my Search Engine Rankings page

Meta

META Keyword when included with in the header of web pages provide additional information to browsers and search engines. And this in turn may help improve your rank in searches.

unfortunately not all search enignes recognise meta tags. For more on meta tags please visit the meta page

Improving Navigation

Visitors don't always enter web sites at the main page. Sadly on most sites links to internal pages are available only on the main page or the site map page.

Surfers being a trigger happy lot are far more likely click the back button than 'stumble' across these sites. So a navigation aid that links to the most important pages on your site is a sure way to increase page-views

In this site for instance the important sections are linked to at the bottom of the page. And each sections provides links to other pages in the same section.

Now that we have covered most of the topics on basic web design, let's look at using frames.

Note: these pages were created in 1999 and have not been updated since. While some of the content is still relevent you might want to visit raditha.com where you will find more upto date information and a wider collection of articles
