A member of a banner exchange network (also called reciprocal banner network) can earn free
banner impression for her site by displaying banners of other members on her site.
Normally giving two banner impressions earn one exposure for your banner.
That means half the bannerads delivered by the network will be for member sites and the other
half will be for paying advertisers.
When this site first came up nearly two years ago, banner advertising was the
most popular method of website promotion. This is no longer true. Clickthrough rates have
dropped to such levels that most people have taken down all the network banners on their sites.
Many are opting for paid for banner advertising, keyword placement and exchanging reciprocal
links as the prefered methods of promotion.
The two most popular networks used to be and (perhaps still are) the LinkExchange and Smartclicks
networks. There are many more smaller networks but they appear and disappear
too fast to keep track of them all.

LE banners usually loads very fast and they don't spoil the looks of
your site like some banners tend to. My click through ratios (CTR) for
LE are lower than with Smart clicks for similar banners
LE also provides excellent statistics about ad displays, click through
and viewing. Which happen to be the only source of web site stats available
to some members.
LE also provides their members with a lot of resources including free
banner creation, free scanning services and tips on site design and promotions.
Some of these services are provided by volunteer LE members. Also thrown

Smartclicks was perhaps the first major banner-exchange network to offer
targeting and animation. However Smart clicks is less popular then Link
Exchange.
But smart clicks makes up for it in other ways; most notably an excellent
targeting control feature. Your banner will be displayed across the network
and the best categories for it will be chosen automatically based on Click
Through Ratios.
A special feature of Smart clicks is Smartopps. This scheme rewards
you for signing up for affiliate programs.
