Kurunegala

Kurunegala like many Sri Lankan towns and villages is centered on a lake. But what's special about Kurunegala is the huge rocks that encroach the city from all side. The very same rocks made Kurunegala a defensible retreat for kings under siege in ancient times.

But today Kurunegala is best known for its large coconut plantations, paddy fields and a thriving used motorcycle business!.

The road from Colombo to the ancient cities of Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura passes through Kurunegala. Many often stop over to picnic by the lake or climb one of the many rocks that sorround the city.
