Kandy (Nuwara). |
|
Yet another world heritage site, Kandy is known as the Hill Capital and widely considered to be one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka. Being a world heritage sites has it's drawbacks, the city's streets are as narrow as they used to be a hundred years ago, so forget taking your own car. You will be better off in a taxi or a trishaw which can dart in and out of traffic. On the other hand getting to Kandy is quite easy, there is good intercity bus service with a travel time of just 3 hours. The train ride takes you through a much more scenic route but trains are crowded and don't usually run on schedule.
Almost every where you look you see ancient monuments or places of cultural and religious significance. The most notable obviously being the Temple of The Tooth, one of the holiest of buddhist shrines in the world. The picture to your left is a shot of the temple across the waters of the 'bogambara lake' and the picture above is of the ancient 'Lanka Thilaka Temple' on a hill top just outside the city. The time to visit Kandy is during the 'Perahera Season', the time of the annual pagent of the temple of the tooth. |
