Galle - A World Heritage Site.

Today Galle is a sleepy town south of Colombo. But during it's heyday when the Dutch ruled Sri Lanka, Galle was the Capital of the country.

The old Dutch fort is now a world heritage site, and still stands in it's old glory. Since Galle lies strategicaly on the main east-west shipping routes. The dutch gained control of trade in most of south and south-east asia by controlling the Galle Harbour.

Night Shot of Galle from the fort

Once the Dutch were ousted by the British the capitol was shifted to Colombo. However the British rulers in Ceylon continued to occupy the old Dutch fort and made many additions to it, including a light house and a clock tower.

Descendants of the British and Dutch rulers still live within the fort.

Galle is a place for relaxing and for sight seeing. And the beach resort, Unawatuna is just 10 minutes away
