Hotels
- Colombo has a fine collection of five star hotels.
Rates are not as cheap as they used to be two years ago but still very reasonable. Outside
Colombo the rates may be higher, but still a lot cheaper than in neighbouring
India or Maldives.
Food
- Sri Lankans traditionaly eat rice and curry all the time.
However plenty of Chinese Restaraunts dot the countryside. And in the resorts
Continental Food is also served in many hotels and Restaruants.
In Colombo it's possible to find at least one restraunt serving food from
almost any country in the world. And then there is KFC, Pizza Hut, BurgerLand and
McDonalds.
Night Life
- Colombo knows how to party. The same can be said of the resorts.
And the night clubs in the resorts require less formal attire than those of the
City. One particular section of Colombo distinctly resembles Las Vegas.
Peace and Quite
- For those who whould rather spend their holiday in peace and quite,
Sri Lanka can offer that too. There are plenty of mountain hideaways
that seem to take you to another world. The beaches are not
crowded so taking in the sun is another option. And then there is golf.
Two very very beautiful courses in fact.
Local Travel
- Travel within Sri Lanka can be done cheaply by train. Air-conditioned
Japanese cars are commonly available and not too costly - but
Driving in Sri Lanka is a nightmare. Being a small country
almost any city can be reached by car within 6 hours from the airport.
Travel by bus is very uncomfortable and not recommended.
Safety
- Despite the bad press the country used to recieve, Terrorist activities
were very rare in Colombo. It no longer matters anyway because we have had a ceasefire for two years. The LTTE was never known to target
tourists, and bombs have never gone off in any of the major tourist resorts.
Overall Sri Lanka which is free of muggers and drive by shootings is
probably a lot safer than your home city.
