ITMIN, one of Sri Lanka's Leading Lanka Internet Service Providers (ISP), originaly proposed a tarrif structure where charges were made based on kilobytes transferred in additions to the amount of time spent on line. ITMIN claimed this is the trend with ISPs globaly, however I have yet to come across many ISPs who do follow this model. (it's common practice with some ISPs to use a per KB rate for email but not for internet). However due to severe pressure from customers and government authorities ITMIN had to back down. They now have a model with a sliding scale per kilobyte charge which ranges from Rs 0.05 and Rs 0.50. With most users having to pay a rate of around Rs 0.20 per kilobyte transfered. Though this is a significant reduction from the earlier Rs 0.50 per kilobyte. It is still 20 cents too much.
If successfully implemented by ITMIN it's likely to be adapted by other
Sri Lankan service providers too. Since it could lead to increased profitability for them.
