India :: Sri Lanka's Nearest and Dearest Neighbour.

India is the birthplace of two of the world's major religions and is an ethnically diverse country. As a result India has a very rich history and the countryside is literally covered in historic sites.
This is particularly evident in Capital Delhi where old Mughal fortresses crowd in on modern office blocks.

The country has a lot to offer the visitor. These include skiing in the Himalayan peaks in winter and the beaches in Goa and Kerala. It's big country, but travel by train is comfortable, quick and inexpensive. Driving though, is a nightmare and most cars are not air-conditioned.

Shimla

India is home to some of the best hotels in South Asia. Unfortunately they are rather expensive, with a five star hotel room costing up wards of 275 US dollars (only around US$ 100 in Sri Lanka). Even two or three star hotels charge very high prices. The smaller hotels are often not very clean or the service is very very poor but they are cheap.

The high price of a hotel room is made up for by the very low cost of food. A meal that would cost around US$ 100 in any other parts of the world can be had for around US$ 20-30 in India. And the variety is just amazing.

Indian nationals would find Sri Lanka a great place to visit. In fact the cost of travelling by air between Colombo and the South Indian cities would be much lower than the air fair to a Nothern City.
