Four Birds With One Stone.

April 10, 2008

Terrorists set off bombs to kill people and disrupt civilian lives and cause economic damage. Usually the disruption is short term but not so in Sri Lanka.

When the LTTE set off a bomb that resulted in the death of KA Karu, Minister Jayaraj Fernandopulle also died in the blast. People are now worried about attending new year festivals. That's enough disruption you would think. But the dogs and donkeys of Sri Lanka's police force want more, so they start their usual knee jerk search operation in the Waliveriya area.

The next day the body is brought to the parliament and from the parliament it's taken to the minister's house in Ja-Ela. Roads all along the route are closed resulting in widespread mayhem. Some drivers send two hours on the road to complete a journey that they normally finish in twenty minutes.

It's one of the few working days left before Colombo shuts down for the new year. People miss important meetings, deadlines and school children don't get home till late evening.

That's enough you would think, but not so the idiots who run the show. The funeral is to be held today in Negombo and roads will once again be closed to coincide with it. This is the day that most people are leaving the city for the home towns.
