A good cop for a change.

March 4, 2008

I ran into someone special today. A good cup. There aren't many here in Sri Lanka. Finding a good cop is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. Fortunately for me there was one of them near the Kelani Tissa power station when I had a break down today.

I was heading home from the construction site when I started hearing a strange hum from under the hood. Being the victim of two previous breakdowns I was immidiately worried but, since it was the rush hour I decided to risk it and head for home.

The hum became progressivelly worse and just after the orugodawatte traffic lights, the engine cut off. I moved across to the shoulder on neutral and immediately called my father for help. And my father who's ofice is less than two kilometers away, quickly sent a mechanic and a driver from their workshop. In the meantime I managed to start the car again and moved forward a few meters but had to stop for the traffic light. That's when the engine cut off again for good.

I called BMW Milroy but he was out of the country and his deputy (his cousin) too was out of office. It was then that I ran into the friendly policemen. He helped me push the car onto a center Island and tried to help to no avail. It's the thought that counts. Most times like this you will find that the cops pretend not to notice and will look the other way even ignoring the ensuing traffic snarl up.

So I take my hat off this Constable from the Grand Pass Police Station. Unfortunately I didn't have an opportunity to ask his name.
