Ceasfire

January 24, 2008

It has been a week since the ceasefire has officially ended. The reality is that it ended three or four years ago. The ceasefire agreement (CFA) was confined to being just another document in the national archives. That is no different from countless acts of parliament and agreements that different governments of Sri Lanka have been party to.

The present regime has decided to tear up the CFA, which was signed by a previous regime and has drawn the ire of donor countries. President GotabayaMahinda has responded in style. The government is quick to say we don't really need foreign aid.

Despite all their bluster, this government would be lost without foreign aid. People would stave to death simple as that. They are already starving inspite of all the aid we have recieved but that's because a great deal of it has found it's way into swiss bank accounts.
