What an year
January 8, 2008
What an year this has been, and we are hardly into the second week. Things didn't get off to a good start when Maheshwaran, a Parliamentarian was killed at a kovil on new year's day itself. That was just a week ago, and today another parliamentarian has been killed in a bomb explosion at Ja Ela. This is the second explosion with in the week.
It was only last Saturday that the government carried out a massive search operation through out the western province. The entrances to the city were more or less sealed off causing massive traffic jams. Which is exactly what they did a few weeks ago. Hundreds were arrested for forgetting to take them ID cards with them.
It was against such arrests that the shameless thondaman filed a fundamental rights petition. Yet the government has carried out a repeat telecast and the LTTE has once again shown that the security measures are totally ineffective. If the government cannot protect MPs what chance do ordinary citizens have?
As for Maheshwaran the government wanted him dead. That's why the defence ministry withdrew his security. Not that it would have really mattered (as was seen today). Nevertheless withdrawing the security made it a lot easier for his assassins.
As for DM Dassanayake, the parliamentarian who lost his life today. He was the Mervin Silva of Anamaduwa. And what of Mervin Silva? well it is said that he was one of the first MPs to visit the hospital where the injured Dassanayake was taken to, so he has one good qualities after all.
