Checkpoints to progress.

November 29, 2007

Since this government came to power thousands of checkpoints to progress have come up all over the countryside. Colombo is burdened with more than it's fair share. These checkpoints are supposed to make sure that terrorists do not infiltrate the city and other places of importance.

Two bombs went off yesterday one with in a few kilometers from each other, one in the morning one in the afternoon. Last week the Sunday Leader press was burnt down with in the Ratmalana high security zone (supposedly by government sponsored thugs)

At the checkpoints, if you are thug or a criminal or even a terrorist, all you have to do is to produce a National Identity Card with a Sinhala name on it and you can pass through. You can have a nuclear weapon in your boot it does not matter.

Woe betide you if you have a ID that says you are tamil. You will be asked dozens of questions and your car is given a thorough going over. What if you forget to take your ID with you? You might have to ask a friend or relative to bring it to the checkpoint or worse you might have to goto the police station and someone will need to come there with your ID.

What if you are Tamil (your accent gives you away) and don't have your ID with your when you are stopped at the check point? You shouldn't wish it even on your enemies.
