The Deep

October 17, 2007

The Deep by Mickey Spillane is the second novel by that name which I have read. The other being a story about a giant squid by Peter Benchly. If the author is Peter Benchly there will be some association with the sea. If the author is Mikey Spillane you can bet that it will have a hard talking, hard drinking and hard hitting detective named Mike Hammer in it.

You will lose your bet. There is no Mike Hammer here. The main character is a guy called "Deep". This is the first time that I have read through a Mikey Spillane without the hammer so for the first couple of Chapters, I thought Deep was a cover name for Hammer. It isn't deep is the real thing. But then again half way through you get the feeling that this guy is a cop working under cover. And in the end that does turn out to be the case.

The deep was the book that helped me to survive some boring speeches at the state literary fiasco.
