Sri Lanka It's Happening

There is a disturbing news item in todays paper that a child has been beaten to death over a slice of bread. Well that is really disturbing. You automatically start of thinking the high cost of bread is behind it. But when you dig deeper you find that the real cause is even more disturbing.

The child's mother works as a domestic in Colombo and she had been left in the care of her drunken Uncle. The uncle apparently didn't give her enough to eat and beat her up daily. On the night of her death, she had 'stolen' a slice of bread out of hunger and the uncle had hit her so hard that she had died.

This sort of thing happens far too often. What is really sad is that it will happen again and again because Sri Lanka Police is totally corrupt and inefficient and will not lift a fingure to prevent this sort of thing from happening , or to bring such animals to justice when it does happen.
