The war mongering JVP , a former terrorist organization has fallen into their own trap. In the late 90s there was an uprising in the country organized by the JVP. The then government (a UNP government) crushed it brutally using much more force than needed.

The JVP has since then taken to mainstream politics but their hatred of the UNP has not diminished. They have often announced that they will not let the UNP govern this country even if it means dragging the whole country down the gutter.

They have kept their word. It was the JVP's grassroots mobilzation and the secret deal with the LTTE that bought Mahinda to the presidential palace. But is now costing the JVP dearly. Their election campaigns have always been about the cost of living. During the past two years, the cost of living has risen faster than at any other time in the country's history.

Now the UNP is agitating against the present government pointing out that rampant corruption and widespread inefficiency is the cause of the high cost of everything. The JVP would dearly love to join the fight but they cannot, they are sworn enemies of the UNP. So they are just going to watch and wait (and prop up the government and the cost of living) while their support base disappears.
