A nation of tree haters.

July 28, 2007

I have often said that Sri Lankan's love dirty politicians and hate trees. Take for example the beautifull jak fruit tree that was on the land adjoinining mine in Battaramulla. It's gone now. They had chopped it down while I was in Sigiriya.

That tree probably took fifty years to grow. I simply can't understand why people are stupid enough to cut them down. Jak trees are protected by law. You need to apply for a permit before cutting one down. In this land of red tape, a palm of two would have to be greased and it would take a lot of time and effort to get that permit. So why goto all that trouble?
