Sigiriya

July 25, 2007

The last weekend was spent at Sigiriya. This being my first visit to Sigiriya in six years. Took my new Sigma lens with me but didn't get much opportunity to use it for shooting birds primarily because we spent the night at the Sigiriya Village instead of in the middle of the jungle as I have done in the past.

Sigiriya and Pidurangala

The Sigiriya Village is a fine hotel built right in the middle of the old Sigiriya Lake. The lake of course is no more - it has silted up and dried up and the dam has crumbled. The presence of two hotels and houses in the middle of the lake means it will never be restored. Indeed few of the guests of these hotels are even aware that there was a lake at all.

All the guests need to go past Petanangala, small rocky outcrop to enter the Citadel few give it a second glance. Hardly suprising because only a small percentage of the visitors even pause at the water gardens or boulder gardens with in the citadel. They are all hell bent on making a mad rush to top of the mountain where there is nothing but a grand view of the sorounding country side. Heck many don't spend much time even on the frescoes.
