Banning websites

June 25, 2007

Not satisified with censorship on the press, tv and radio, the government of Gotabaya Rajapaksa has decided to impose a chinese style ban on anti government websites. One of the most prominent targets of this ban is the pro LTTE website tamilnet.

The government spokesman is strongly denying that tamilnet and other sites are being banned. But then the same spokesman said the ethnic cleansing operation of a few weeks ago was just the government's attempt to provide transport to tamils in the city who volunteered to leave. The spokesman has failed to explain why certain sites like tamilnet cannot be accessed by sri lankans no matter what ISP you use. But yet the same sites can be accessed by people living outside sri lanka.

People soon cottoned on to the ban and started using anonymizers and open proxies. Now you find that even some of these anonymizers are being banned!!
