A few good men.
June 21, 2007
All that is needed for evil to thrive is for good men (and women) to do nothing. The bad news is that there are only a few of them in this failed state. But the good news is that some of them can be found in the Supreme court.
The honorable judges of the supreme court have been fighting a lone battle for democracy in this country while everyone else has chosen to keep mum. The most significant decision came around 2 years ago, when the former president CBK tried to outstay a welcome and establish a dictatorship. The supreme court then showed her the door.
But the country was rid of a dictator only to see an even a more dastardly one become the president. While CBK was elected by the people, Gotabaya certainly wasn't. It was his brother Mahinda who contested the election and won thanks to the LTTE enforced boycott. But it is Gotabaya, and the other Rajapaksa siblings that tell Mahinda what to do. President Mahinda is a mere puppet
Some of those things that the puppet president has been doing includes ethnic cleansing and muzzling of the press. Regarding ethnic cleansing, the supreme court was very swift to react. Regarding the muzzling of the press, the journalists themselves were slow to act, and of course the supreme court cannot act unless one apeals to it. One publisher, Tiran Alles, did, and the courts were quick to intervene.
One wonders why so few people are filing Fundamental Rights cases.
