Land of Puppets
June 16, 2007
No I am not talking about Ambalangoda famous for it's woodcrafts; Fine traditional masks and puppets. I am speaking of the country as a whole. Ours is a land of puppets.
The president appoints all the ministers and because the defense ministry is one of his own, he appoints the defense secretary as well. But for all intents and purposes the defense secretary, the president's brother and former filling station attendant acts as if he appointed the president. But that is not so, the president was appointed by minority of the population with the help of a secret deal with the LTTE (or so says two members of parliament from his own party).
Pulling puppet strings is becoming quite a pastime. Last weeks ethnic cleansing was said to have been done at the behest of the defense secretary, then the prime minister made a public apology because the president pulled his strings. Then another minister a lowly loudmouth goes public saying the apology is uncalled for. Obviously somebody has been pulling his strings.
