Limping back to normal.
April 19, 2007
Colombo is finally limping back to normal after the holidays. April is the great holiday season in Sri Lanka. Officially you are allowed just two days off. But most people take about a week's vacation.
Many people living in Colombo have their roots in the provinces. Quite a few hail from stagnant backwaters of the south where opportunities are hard to come by. Most these people head back to the villages where they hail from.
Of the millions who work in Colombo at least half do not live with in the Western Province, these people invariably stay away from work. Well they have no choice. Bus drivers are on holiday too.
When businesses find that half their staff are on holiday it is not economical for them to keep their offices open so they bow to the inevitable and put up shutters.
