Former Ministers and Former Cricket bosses in detention

April 8, 2007

The former president of the Sri Lanka Cricket board, Thilanga Sumathipala has been sentenced for two years in prison. Being a powerful and influential man, he tried every trick in the book. Most famously when he persuaded a judge to grant him bail on an earlier occasion. The trial proceeded thanks mainly to the vigilance of the Sunday Leader. He has appealed and has immediately been bailed out.

Former minister Sripathi on the other hand is still in detection for allegedly misusing a state vehical. If that charge sticks almost every single member of the Sri Lankan parliament could and should end up in jail. The real reason for his detention is trying to expose a secret deal between the government and the LTTE.

Sripathi's case hardly raised a murmur but people did use to talk about Thilanga Sumathipala's case since he was the head of Sri Lanka cricket. But people are not talking about it now Bob Woolmer's murder and Sri Lanka's narrow win over england is more important.
