MP detained
March 20, 2007
It's several days since former minister Siripathy was remanded. The charge against him is not returning a state owned vehicle he used sometime back. Misuse of state property is a charge against which you cannot usually get bail.
In the past whenever a minister, a member of parliament or a powerful businessman has been remanded they usually managed to get themselves into hospital on some pretex or other, there by spending their time in detention in relative comfort. In this instance the judge offered this option to siripathy (siting reasons of security). And to the former ministers great credit he turned it down.
So far, during the former ministers lengthy career in politics there has been only one good deed to speak of. That is bringing the secret deal between the government and the LTTE to the public attention. Now there are two good things, to speak of.
I think the MP was supposed to have been produced in court today and the decision of whether or not he should be granted bail be discussed. I would not be suprised if the evening news fails to mention it at all and devotes their full attention to the cricket.
