Going back to Galle.

March 12, 2007

Yesterday by aunt from Galle came to visit. She suggested that we return to Galle the place that we left in 1984. Thanks to Dialog Broadband it might in fact be possible to return to Galle after so long.

Of course the reason that we left Galle wasn't lack of internet access, heck internet as we know it wasn't even around those days. The reasons for leaving was that Galle was (and still is) a stagnant pool without economic growth.

Now with high speed internet access it will be possible to live in Galle and still work in Colombo. If and when they complete the southern highway travel time between the two cities will be just one hour. Sometimes it takes longer to go from the Fort to Battaramulla.

The advantages of living in Galle are numerous, it's greener, cooler and life goes on at a much slower pace than in Colombo. There is less traffic, less pollution, and plenty of fresh seafood. Many people from Colombo think the place is dry. Galle itself might be but you have two hot spots on either side of Galle. And you don't have to give 1000 bucks to a cop every time you have a beer.

What are the disadvantages? The place is retarded and forever in the economic doldrums. Anyone who's got an iota of sense leaves for Colombo soon as they can. That leads to a vicious cycle that can never be broken. Perhaps if enough professionals move back things might change
