HNB Takes twenty days for cheque clearence
February 22, 2007
The Sri Lankan banking system an automated cheque clearing process. This process is supposed to be very efficient and a cheque will be realised (or returned) in a day. Unfortunately Hatton National Bank hasn't heard about that system yet.
On the 2nd of February I deposited a cheque into my personal current account at the HNB Talangama Branch. Thus the funds should have been available on the 6th (allowing for the long weekend). It wasn't. Another weekend came and went but the funds were still unavailable.
Inquiries from Nations Trust Bank and HNB revealed that an error had been made by an officer of the HNB Talangama branch. They assured me that the error has been rectified and the funds will be available that very day. More than a week has passed but no funds yet. And they haven't returned the cheque either.
Today I decided to visit the branch in person and give a piece of my mind to the Manager. She is absent. Then I chose to vent my frustration on the asistant manager. She is out of office. Thus the Talangama branch of the Hatton National Bank is headless today and brainless everyday.
