The Duly Elected
February 10, 2007
If officials of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) are to be believed at the last couple of elections, people of this country voted overhelmingly against the policies and the poltians of the United National Party (UNP). In any democratic country leaders of the UNP will find themselves in the dustbins of history. Fortunately for them Sri Lanka is not a democratic country.
President Mahinda, the leader of the SLFP and the one misleading the country at the moment has invited discards from the UNP to join his cabinet and got himself in the guiness book of world records in the process. The record is creating the world's largest cabinet.
Some leaders of the SLFP, who campaigned hard for his victory were dead against getting the flotsam on board. Two of them have been duly rewarded for their efforts by being dismissed from the cabinet. The third is a person who never worked hard in this country.
It was the former president Chandrika who set this trend by asking a duly elected member of the parliament to resign so that a two bit politician who was overwhelmingl rejected by the voters could sit in parliament and enjoy all the perks.
Now mahinda has gone one step further by adding to his cabinet a basketfull of rotten apples while forcing out three ministers who were duly elected.
