Indedependence
February 4, 2007
As Sri Lanka celebrates it's independence today let's reflect.
You have the complete freedom to visit independence square but not to drive around it (road closed due to security reasons).
You have the complete freedom to park anywhere and the cops have the complete freedom to tow you away (even if you are parked at a designated parking area).
You can visit the Galle Face green if you keep off the green and don't part next to it. You have the complete freedom to express your disgust about it, if you can find a newspaper that is couragous enough to publish your letters to the editor.
Editors have the complete freedom to write about anything as long as they do not criticise the blotched and politically driven war efforts.
You have the freedom take to photographs anywhere as long as you avoid parts of the country that contain ministries, army camps, airports, harbours, or the houses of politicians and senior officers of the armed forces.
You have the freedom to use a cellphone as long as you don't use it inside government buildings. Using the phone while driving is illegal but you will not be copped, because the cops value your freedom. They value the freedom of murders and drag barons too.
If you don't like the setup, you have the freedom to eject the party in power but it's ministers and their goons have the freedom to stuff the ballot boxes to make sure that you don't
