Moonstone.
September 10, 2006
My father daya dissanayake has released two books on the same date, one in Sinhala and one in English. An author releasing two books in two different language on the same day, surely is something very unusual anywhere in the world. It might even be a first for Sri Lanka. The two books (Moonstone in Enlish and 'Chandrarathnage Bawanthara Charikawa' in Sinhala) tell the same story. One is not a translation of the other. Prof. DCRA, who was the chief guest at the event had a name for such pairs of work, but unfortunately I have already forgotten it!
When my father writes something everyone in the family get's involved, he gets our comments on the manuscript and totally ignores them! So for this pair of books, I managed to wiggle my way out of proof reading it. As a result I have read neither! So for the moment I will have to judge the book by it's cover or rely on the comments of Prof DCRA, Prof. Sunandra Mahendra and Dr. Lakshi.
So according to their comments, the English version is a better read than the Sinhala one. In fact, prof. Mahendra said the sinhala version is is mentally fatiguing. Let's see if he is right.
