Three cheers for the strikers.
July 18, 2006
The overpaid and underworked employees of the Colombo harbour are on a work to rule campgain. Whatever that is it certainly is the antidote to the traffic jams that plague Colombo.
Three Wheeler and Maruti drivers are doing their utmost to make up for the absence of the smoke belching slow moving containers to clog up the city streets, fortunately even they haven't suceeded and many intersections were blisfully free of traffic.
Prophets of doom are saying the strike will bring the economy to it's knees, but I don't think so, the economy is already crawling on all fours. If you believe the 8% growth rate bull shovelled by the Finance Ministry, you should invest in a Pyramid Scheme.
Hang on a second, less traffic means less fuel wasted and a reduced subsidy for the government (thus avoiding a major diplomatic row), so yes the economy might indeed end up on it's knees. Crawling to kneeling, that would be quantum leap.
