The Jam Fruit Tree
July 15, 2006
I am at Great Western and rereading the Jam Fruit Tree. This place is mentioned in the book, which I found to be hilariously funny 12 years ago when I read it as a teenager.
Funny thing, the book doesn't seem so funny the second time around. Correction; it's still funny and very humourous but there are quite a few dark spots sprinkled all over it's chapters which I seemed to have missed the first time.
There are other interesting passengers too, we all know who Carloboy is, but prey who is Marlene de Mello? have I read any of her books?
The tree (the garden variety) was said to have been forty years old at the time the Von Blosses lived under it. I don't think there are any 40 year old Jam Fruit trees anywhere in Sri Lanka. They are not allowed to grow. Sri Lankans have a fondness for cutting down trees and particularly hate the Jam Fruit Tree because it's roots are supposed to spread far and wide.
