Yet another half measure.
June 12, 2006
Sri Lankan governments only deal in half measures. Lilley livered presidents and ministers who roar at election meetings are really sheep in wolves clothing. At least that's the way they are when it comes to dealing with serious issues.
For more than two years petrol and diesel have been heavily subsidized. The minister loves to pretend that we are awash in crude oil. With each passing day the subsidy grows because the price of crude keeps growing. Occaisionally the government decides to raise the prices slightly like they have done a couple of days ago.
In spite of the price hike, petrol and diesel continue to be heavily subsidized. One simply cannot understand the logic of raising the price of petrol by five rupees when the minister says it should be raised by ten. More unfathomable is why the head of the ceylon petrolium corporation when out on a limb a few days ago insisting that the prices wouldn't be revised.
If any Sri Lankan took the CPC chiefs words as the gospel truth, you can't blame him because Sri Lankans have a very low IQ. A couple of years ago the minister famously insisted that petrol prices will not be increased and blasted the UNP for raising prices during their reign, then increased the prices a few days later.
