Politicians keep their promises (for a change).
May 5, 2006
On wednesdays there was a bomb scare. A false one. A rumour started going around in the morning that a bomb had gone off in Narahenpita, fortunately it turned out to be false. People are now jumpy, each time someone lights a cracker, or a car tire blows out people think bombs have gone off. That's exactly the way things used to be before the Ceasefire was signed.
Before the ceasefire was signed Bauddhaloka Mawatha (Bullers Road) was closed from the Thunmulla Junction upto Stanely Thilakaratne mawatha for security reasons. Once again that road was closed on wednesday.
If terrorists can get inside the army headquarters they sure can get inside bullers road. Todays paper carried an article by a journalist who was right in the middle of the two juntions whent he barricades were put up about how negligent the security forces really were. This road closure is just an attempt by the powers that be to inconvinience the public. The public however cannot complain they are the once who voted for this goverment. Unfortunately it turned out to be temporarily measure, so the people aren't getting their just deserts (yet).
The government of Mahinda Rajapaksha came to power on an anti peace platform. They promised to tear up the ceasefire agreement and to get rid of the Norwegian mediators. They promised many more things but none of those promises have been honoured. Once promise has been honoured and that promise is to take the country to war.
