Desperately seeking a May day rally.

May 1, 2006

The bomb that went off couple of days ago has been forgotten but traces still linger in the minds of some people. So it has been a blessing for the JVP and the UNP to political parties stuggling to keep their noses above the current.

Since Mahinda won the election thanks to the help of the LTTE enforced boycott, the UNP has been decimated. There exists one form of legalized bribery in Sri Lanka and many a UNP parliamentarian has been tempted to 'defect' by it. The traditional UNP support base has also been eroded

So the UNP stalwarts were scratching their head trying to figure out how they can bring a respectable number of people to their May day rally. Now they don't have to. They can site security reasons and not hold the rally. The same goes for the JVP too.

The trouble for the JVP is that they chose a very hard line against the peace process and Mahinda promised them the moon and to toe their line just to get their support for the Election. Since the elections Mahinda is giving them the cold shoulder and the JVP had no option but to contest the local government elections on their own. The results came as a shock the JVP, they are not the darlings of the working classes that they thought they were.
