New year in Seru Kele.

April 14, 2006

So it's New Year once again. Last year, new years day was spent at Seru Kele, my Sisters small estate close to Anamaduwa. Getting there was quite fun for a change.

Just before the new year, there is this so called in-auspicious time. After the inauspicous time ends, there comes the time to light to hearth for the first time, shortly after that it's the auspicious time to partake in the first meal for the year.

We didn't light the hearth in our house, well we don't have a hearth anyway, we use LP gas like everyone else. So many people in Colombo would have switched on their gas cooker at the auspicious time. We left home shortly after and the roads were deserted and the speed cops too were at home. I haven't had so much fun at the wheels in months.

Even my speeding couldn't get us to Seru Kele in time, but that doesn't matter, after a breakfast of Kiribath (Milk Rice) and sweetmeats it was time for a chat, time to do some bird watching and then as the heat of the day became unbearable, it was time to jump into the natural pool.

During the evening, we had one of those typical April showers and afterwards it was time to head back to Colombo. The drive was once again fun. No sign of the traffic which usually clogs the Sri Lankan roadways today. All in a;l it was a pretty nice new year.
