Peace at Last or War at Last
February 23, 2006
So we had peace talks at last in a Geneva. President Mahinda and his coalition partners probably failed geography in school. Heck some of these members of parliament probably failed in every subject.
If you voted for mahinda you probably don't know where Geneva is either. It certainly isn't in Sri Lanka. (Earlier the government insisted talks would only be held in Sri Lanka). It certainly isn't in Asia (that was after the government started to back paddle, which happened just a couple of days after the election). Geneva ladies and gentlmen is in Europe. The extremist buddhist monks who whipped up racial and religious anger to win the hard lines votes for the president said absolutely no talks in Europe.
The former terrorist organization the JVP which did the donkey work at the election protested frequently in front of the Norwegian facilitators. The JVP says they are stance towards Norway has not changed. But they are not demonstrating anymore and they are not calling all kinds of names at them.
The cake goes to the president's own strategist, a member of his own political party, who accused the Norwegians of being salmon eating busibodies. This darling of the JVP and said norwegians would not be involved in the peace process, well they arranged the meeting.
President mahinda's cronies threatened to tear up the ceasefire agreement (CFA), then in recent weeks that position changed to amending it. Indeed three days ago the papers were full of stories about how the government would push it through at the meetings. That ladies and gentlemen has not happened.
The ceasefire stays as it is, unless of course either side goes on another shooting spree. Since the only topic that has been discussed at the talks seems to have been the hot weather in Colombo, we can only conclude that both the LTTE and the government would rather have war than peace. Neither side wants to be accused of starting the war that's all.
