Cricket's long slide.
February 7, 2006
If you are a Sri Lankan cricket fan you can only hope for one result for the match that is currently in progress between Sri Lanka and South Africa. Defeat for the Sri Lankans of course. Not just defeat but resounding defeat.
If Sri Lanka should win todays match you can rest assured that nothing will be done to halt the slide. The slide began last year when Sri Lanka struggled to beat weak teams such as Bangladesh and West Indies. If not for a few individual acts of brilliance we might well have lost.
But the end result was the the team won, and going by the adage that 'all is well that ends well', nothing was done to trim the dead wood in the team. They then went on a tour to India were the team was literaly hammered into submission. The result should really have been 7-0 but it was 6-1, so the cricket board did some half measures and just juggled the team without pruning and grafting.
Then it was a visit to New Zealand where Sri Lanka looked on course for another whitewash, but it was not to be. The last match was salvaged, that meant the board did nothing this time. The same old players who fail day in and day out were persisted with on the current tour to australia.
During this tour, except for a couple of acts of brilliance Sri Lanka has struggled to win anything at all. It's possible that this match may still be won if either Vaas or Murali pulls something out of a hand. Hopefully that will not happen. If it does happen the board will not do anything at all once again to reform the team.
