An year of lies

December 31, 2005

The former president Chandrika was a liar. She never did what she said and never said what she did. During the 11 years of her reign, she lied at every opportunity. Her most notable achievement was to have assured the international community and the former prime minister Ranil that the parliament will not be dissolved, just days before the dissolution.

The man who suceeded her, President Mahinda has already shown us in six weeks that he is even more talented than the former president when it comes to the art of lying. But the winner's trophy really goes to the president's coalition partners; the (former) terrorist organization the JVP and the extremist buddhist monks the JHU.

Before the election the president promised that Norway would have no further involvement in the peace process. Since the election the president has had to run crying to them in the face of mounting violence in the north. The president said the Armed forces will not tolerate LTTE ceasefire violations. The army and the navy are both running like dogs with the tails between their legs.

The monks and the JVP who burned effigies of Norwegian facilitators in the old days are consipicous by the silence. The JHU once attempted to take the body of a man slain by the LTTE to the norwegian embassy. During those days only one or two persons died each month at the hands of the LTTE. Now that 81 have died this month the monks are praying. They should be disrobed.

The JVP leader, Somawansa said the army should be disbanded if it is not effective. As a former terrorist he would surely love to see the army disbanded. There is no doubt that he has a lot of sympathy for the LTTE terrorists in the north. But despite the army's repeated failure to protect their own men (let alone the territorial integrity of the country). The JVP's cardboard hero is silent.
