Despite Nuwara Eliya being a largely Tamil populated district there has never been any incident of LTTE terrorism in Nuwara Eliya. The only terrorists incidents in that district have involved the JVP. The killed quite a few Tea Estate superintendants in the late eighties.

The reason that the LTTE does not have any influence in Nuwara Eliya is because of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC). It's a Union/Political Party. Over the last 25 years or so the CWC has always worked to improve the lot of the plantation works (while making a buck for themselves). As a result a poor estate labourer has access to more facilities and has more welfare benefits than a poor villager in the Nuwara Eliya district.

Now the present government it is trying to destroy the CWC. The government does not take kindly to the CWC partnering with the UNP at the presidential election. As a result the CWC threatened to join up with the TNA. The TNA is an an LTTE front. If the partnership goes through the TNA will manipulate things and occupy the position now occupied by the CWC. Just like the JVP did to the (President's) SLFP.

So very soon under this nationalist government we will not only have a terrorist problem in the North and East plus Colombo but one in Nuwara Eliya as well. This time around the consquence will be severe. Ceylon Tea still is our largest nett foreign exchange earner.
