Empty Hands.

November 25, 2005

This is not about karate. The outgoing president says she is going home empty handed with out mud or blood. Meaning to say she has not been involved in any blood letting and that no mud that has been slung her way has stuck.

As for going home empty handed, she is infact leaving with a deed for a 1.5 Acre plot of land in Battaramulla. Battaramulla is one of the most expensive suburbs in Colombo. The land is said to be worth at least a 100 million rupees.

This used to be a marsh land, a part of an important bird habitat, the land was filled up years ago to build a presidential palace. Then funds ran out and the project was abandoned.

If the marsh didn't contain enough mud, let us also not forget all the allegations that the UNP levelled in the years past against CBK and her corrupt cabinent. CBK herself said many of here ministers were corrupt (yet did nothing against them), so there must have been some truth to those allegations. Unfortunately the cowardly UNP chose not to do anything more than scream from
the roof tops. Impeachment was discussed several times but they never moved forwards.

Last but not least let us not forget that CBK reigned through the most violent period in Sri Lanka's recent history. Thousands and thousands of people died in battle in the north and yeast. Dozens of ships were sunk and aircraft downed. Half the national fleet was wiped out in an attack on the airport. The central bank was nearly levelled, the holiest shrine of buddhism, the temple of the tooth relic was bombed. Vital oil storage facilities were destroyed. Several ministers were killed. The list just goes on and on.
