The positives
November 22, 2005
Let's look at the positives from the election results. As everyone knows by now, the election was won by the JVP candidate Mahinda. Let's forget that for the moment and look on the bright side.
They say people deserve the government they get. If people who were worst effected by the tsunami, want to vote the Prime Minister of the government who did nothing to help them, they have the government that they deserve for sure. If you also consider that, there was a huge scandal involving the prime minister regarding the transfer of tsunami funds you begin to wonder if the tsunami was indeed a punishment.
The stock market has dropped by about 15% since the election. There are bargains across the board ready for the picking. Let us just hope that this is not the start of a bear market.
Labour unions across the country ar rejoicing that they will be able to get better terms. Mahinda is the darling of the trade unions, wild cat strikes were the order of the day when he was the labour minister.
The LTTE has finally entered the democratic process. It's the LTTE that decided the outcome of the election by preventing the northern tamils from voting.
