Election Results

November 18, 2005

The Sri lanka presidential election results are coming in thick and fast. About two million votes have been counted so far and it looks like the JVP is in the lead. At the last count, they had around 51% of the votes cast, a lead of about 65,000 but there is a catch.

Most of the electorates where the results have been announced are from districts that the JVP was expected to win and win easily. Which they have done. The only exception are the Colombo and Badulla districts, where the UNP was expected to win. So far there is nothing to show that the UNP will not increase their margin in Colombo.

Reslults from other districts where the UNP is expected to win have yet to be announced. For example, no results have yet to be released from the Nuwara Eliya district. The results from one electorate from Kandy has been announced and it points to a clear UNP win.

The question now is will the marigin of victory in Colombo, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya be good enough to set of the margin of defeat from other districts?
