Cricket and Elections
November 6, 2005
The last time we had an election in this country it was around the same time that the all conquering australian cricketers ran up against the Sri Lankan team captained by man totally lacking in captaincy skills.
The current captain has shown beyond doubt with todays performance that he is a fair weather captain capable of battering the minnows into submission but lacking ideas when up against a formidable opposition in unfamiliar terrain.
So you may ask what does all this have to do with cricket? The feel good factor. A huge majority of Sri Lankans are cricket crazy. They might be divided over everything else but most just love their cricket. Even the most die hard sinhala buddhist extremists cheers when Murali takes a wicket.
When the cricket team loses everyone feels bad. When the cricket team wins everyone feels good. People vote back the government in power when they feel good.
