The missing backlash
November 4, 2005
The spokesman for the JVP's presidential candidate is minister Mangala Samaraweera. The minister is incapable of stringing together two sentences with out insulting anyone.
In recent days he insulted a JHU monk and the police force in two consecutive days. The JHU is the party of the extermist buddhists monks.
You might think monks, religious fanatics and sinhala extremists would be most outraged by the Ministers broadside against the monk. You might think the JHU which is in alliance with the Mahinda Rajapaksha whould leave the alliance. Think again.
The extremists have a differnt agenda. That of suppressing the minorities and taking away your right to choose your own religion. For that reason the Monks MPs and others have largely ignored the ministers comments. Just the same way they ignored the physical assault on one of their members inside the parliament . Just the same way they have been ignoring all other insults. The same can be said about a majority of Sri Lankan Sinhala Language newspapers.
Many of them are published by the state media mafia at public expense (they don't make a profit). Others are staffed by extremists so they have held back their pens. (they don't use computers).
What about the english language newspapers? they couldn't care less. Even if they cared, they lack the spine to take a stand on any issue.
