The buffer zone fiasco
October 15, 2005
The tsunami has long been forgotten by many Sri Lankans. Most politicians and officials have already spent all the money they skimmed off the the aid. In one case all the money that collected in a certain fund was skimmed off. These politicians have long forgotten the people still leaving in tents.
The primary reason that these refugees cannot return to their old houses is because of the ill advised 100M Land Grab zone (officially known as the buffer zone). The prime minister and the president don't often see eye to eye but they were both in agreement in imposing the buffer zone.
The buffer zone has been a great blessing for the opposition UNP, it provided them with a platform to campaign on. Even before they started their protest campaign the government started to turn a blind eye to many of the buildings being put up or repaired with in the buffer zone. No suprise really it's not the law that is blind in Sri Lanka but the policemen.
Now the government has finally started to backtrack on the buffer zone but the damage has already been done.
