St Clairs Waterfall : Sold

October 14, 2005

With the gathering of the dark forces of Sinhala Extremism under the banner of the Mahinda Rajapakshe, the Tamil and Muslim political parties had but one choice. That one choice is to support the candidacy of Ranil for the president.

Not having any choice didn't stop the CWC (Ceylon Workers Congress party of the upcountry tamils) and the SLMC (Sri Lanka Muslim Congress) from pretending otherwise and negotiating with both parties to extract a pound and a half of flesh.

The CWC for it's part put forward a nineteen item proposal to which the UNP candiate agreed to. One of these points was to halt the felling of trees in the estates. The CWC leader Thondaman's concern about the enviorenment is touching. The CWC has long been at the forefront of the battle against the Upper Kotmale project. The hydro project that will see the destruction of the countries two most admired waterfalls.

What is puzzling is why the champion of the St. Clairs waterfall thought fit not to insist on stopping this upper kothmale project as a condition for offering support. He did put that forward as a condition when propping up the motley crew that makes up the current government. The government is going ahead with Upper Kothmal regardless and Thondaman has kept mum.
