The one who breaks the law most often will win

October 7, 2005

Today is the nomination day for the presidential election. Even before nominations have been handed over illegal posters and cut out with the similing faces of the candiates dot the countryside.

Millions of rupees have been spent on removing these posters and cut outs. You can imagine how much has been spent on printing them and putting them up. Where does the money come from? probably tsunami aid.

Even before the presidential election was announced. There were serious allegations against the prime minister on misusing tsunami aid. After a lot of pressure by the newspapers the CID finally started an investigation. Now the prime minister (who is the presidential candiate of the JVP) has taken a court order preventing the CID from continuing the investigation. Is he afraid that his name will be cleared?

Nomination day means Colombo comes to a virtual halt with many of the roads round the election comissioner's office being close to traffic. Unfortunately there are the very roads that millions of suburbanites must take to reach their offices in the city. This is just another example of how Sri Lankan politician cause more harm than good. Many are incapable of doing good.
