Boil 'em in Oil
October 1, 2005
The government has announced out of the blue that there may be a massive oil depoit off the coast of Sri Lanka. The government spoksmen have two roles to play; being the spokesman and being the court jest. Therefor any officials statements from the governemtn of Sri Lanka should be taken lightly. A large does of salt wouldn't go amiss either.
Assuming that 'they are joking' is the only way to keep one's sanity and avoid blowing a fuse. 'They are joking' is in fact what the president said to the BBC many long years ago when we had another ceasefire and the LTTE was threatening to break it. But they werent joking.
Getting back to the oil, if there is any semblence of truth in these statements it means that the stakes at the upcoming election has just gone higher. If the wells are drilled and if they don't come up dry, any oil that is pumped out of them will be sold and the money will be diposited directly into the accounts of several politicians. Not a cent will make it's way into the government coffers.
We will most probably end up selling the oil and gas to a foreign company for $50 a barrel and buying from another company at $75.00 barrel. That allows for two kickbacks instead of none.
