The president's pet hate

September 9, 2005

Ever wondered what the answer would be if one were to ask the president who or what she hates the most?

It certainly will not be the JVP the organization that killed her husband (as recorded in the Official biography and several speeches). She formed an alliance with them once and had a coalition government with them for over an year. Now she has endorsed the pact between the JVP and her would be successor. Thus there is no reason to doubt that the president just loves the JVP.

Her pet hate certainly would not be the leader of the opposition. She was full of praise for him a few weeks ago. Newspaper columns are rife with speculation that he secret wish is for her old friend Ranil to become the next president. (It must be the well hidden soft spot in her heart, she wants to give a chance to the poor chap she defeated so many times at elections).

The presidential hate number one is probably not the LTTE, the organization that caused her serious injury five years ago. According to the president's own statements she is a forgiving kind and would like to have a peacefull settlement with the LTTE.

So what does she hate the most? Birds.
During the president's term we have seen the Bellanvila and Jayawardanepura marshes being completely filled up. Birds nests in both these sanctuaries have given way to housing projects. The ill advised, and now abondoned coastal buffer zone has resulted in thousands of acres of woods/marshes being destroyed. Not to mention the 500 acres of jungle that was cut down in Hambantota after the tsunami to 'help hambantota'.

There is still a little room left for birds in Jayawardanapura. She wants that land for herself. In other words Rs 100 million worth of real estate has been gifted to the president by the cabinet.
