Slap in the face for CBK (and the UNP)
August 27, 2005
The president's clumsy attempt to do away with democracy in Sri Lanka has finally been struck a body blow from which there is little hope of recovery.
The supreme court showed once and for all why it's called the supreme court. The Elections Commisioner has proved once again that one good man can make the difference. He has shown tremondous courage time and again by standing upto the president and the government. Many times in the recent past all that stood between democracy and a dictatorship was an old man by the name of Dayananda Dissanayake.
The monks for their part have finally shown that they do have a role to play in Sri Lankan politics. They made the crucial petition to the supreme court calling for elections this year.
The decision of the courts that the presidential term ends this year is a slap in the face for CBK who once accused the judiciary of being totally corrupt. The decision is also damning verdict against the main opposition UNP. It has once again been exposed as a party with the spine of a jelly fish.
Though the UNP organized massive protest campaigns agains the president's move to postpone elections. The didn't have the courage to take the matter to the courts. Thankfully the monks rose to the occaision.
